Alan Quine (pictured), Nedomlel, Sproul and Almqvist Join the Griffins
Red Wings prospects Adam Almqvist, Richard Nedomlel, Alan Quine and Ryan Sproul may have seen their respective seasons come to an end, but the trio will join the Grand Rapids Griffins on amatuer try-out contracts (ATOs). For Sproul and Almqvist, who already have entry level contracts with the Wings, this will be a chance to preview the AHL game. Nedomlel and Quine on the other hand, will get another chance to showcase their skills as they attempt to earn NHL contracts.
Almqvist is an offensive defenseman with outstanding hockey sense. The 5-foot-11, 174 pound blueliner just completed his season with HV-71 of the Swedish Elite League where he scored 8 goals and 26 points in 42 games. Almqvist needs to add muscle to his frame to compete at the next level, but he’s expected to play for Grand Rapids of the AHL next season.
Quine, who’s Peterborough Petes failed to make the playoffs, had a solid season with 30 goals and 68 points in 65 games. The 5-foot-11, 184 pound center is an excellent skater with high end speed, but he needs to add bulk to his undersized frame. The Belleville, Ontario native needs to prove to Detroit that he can play a physical game required at the professional level.
Nedomlel is a physical defenseman who turned heads this season with his offensive totals which included 10 goals and 46 points in 83 games for Swift Current of the WHL. The 6-foot-4 225 pound defenseman doesn’t shy away from the physical aspects of the game. Nedomlel took huge strides this season showing he can also play a skilled game when calledupon, but he still needs work on his puck moving skills.
Sproul, who signed a three-year entry level contract few days ago, is a lanky defenseman with a booming shot. The 6-foot-3, 176 pound blueliner has made great strides on his defensive game this season while piling up 23 goals and 54 points in 61 games with the Greyhounds of the OHL. Sproul, who also needs to add muscle to his frame, could make himself a valuable commodity in Detroit’s system if he develops his physical game.
The foursome will join Riley Sheahan and Ramis Sadikov, who signed ATOs over last week, and are expected to be available for the remainder of the Griffins season.
